| James works with the firm’s Intellectual Property & Technology Group in the Denver office, assisting clients with intellectual property issues, technology licensing and agreements, and preparing and prosecuting patent applications relating to electrical, computer, software and mechanical technologies. James is also the Co-Chair of the firm’s Inclusiveness and Diversity Committee.
James manages all aspects of intellectual property matters, including overseeing patent portfolio development; implementing corporate intellectual property strategies; conducting intellectual property audits; handling licensing issues; and advising clients on matters regarding patentability, freedom to operate, infringement and validity issues. He has drafted and prosecuted patents on behalf of clients ranging from large Fortune 100 corporations to startup companies. James has also assisted with patent litigation issues, including strategy, discovery and deposition support, summary judgment issues, jury instructions and trial strategies.
A frequent speaker on patent issues, James has lectured to groups all across the country, including the Minority Corporate Counsel Association, the Colorado Bar Association and the Patent Resources Group. Prior to joining the firm, James was a partner at Dorsey & Whitney. |

Representative Matters | | Represent a software research and development company with significant patent litigation issues including breach of license agreement and counter claims of non-infringement. | | The Firm represents Grupo Cementos de Chihuahua, a Mexico-based cement and basic materials company, in the majority of their legal work in the United States. Brownstein has represented the company in multiple acquisitions of redi-mix companies and assets, bank finance matters, intellectual property, employment, ERISA and employee benefits matters, construction disputes, property tax issues and environmental and permitting matters. | | Successfully defended an exercise equipment manufacturer from a patent infringement suit, favorably resolving the case in the early stages before significant expense was incurred. |
