| As co-chair of Brownstein's Government Relations Group, Mike coordinates the firm's lobbying and public policy work in multiple states and integrates the state work with the firm's Washington, DC office. In Colorado, he provides representation before the legislative and executive branches for clients such as Comcast, Xcel Energy, FedEx Corporation, Johns Manville, Corrections Corporation of America, Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association and the Colorado Auto Dealers Association. At the federal level, he is part of the Brownstein team providing representation for the University of Colorado, the Colorado Cleantech Industry Association and the Independent Pharmacy Cooperative.
Mike served in the Colorado State Senate from 1993 to 2001 and was selected by his caucus to serve as the Senate Minority Leader for seven of his eight years in office, from 1994 to 2001. As a member of the General Assembly's Executive Committee, Mike was responsible for policy and administrative oversight of the Colorado Legislature. During his last year in office, in a Rocky Mountain News survey of his Senate colleagues, Mike was chosen as the Senate's "Most Effective Member," a remarkable honor for a member of the minority party.
During his time in office, Mike sponsored legislation involving telecommunications, tax reform and civil rights. He influenced a wide array of policy areas and is most proud of his sponsorship of Colorado's Brownfields Legislation, which has provided communities and developers a sensible means to expand and redevelop property complicated by real or perceived environmental contamination.
Mike's current practice draws upon a unique perspective combining his legal and political experience. Since his admission to the Colorado Bar in 1982, Mike has practiced law in Denver emphasizing representation of small and large business. He has successfully tried cases at all levels of state and federal court.
Mike has remained active in the public policy arena and was appointed by Republican Governor Bill Owens to positions on the Colorado Commission on Higher Education and the Board of Trustees of Mesa State College. He also served as Treasurer for the successful gubernatorial campaign of Democratic Governor Bill Ritter.
