As the September 2011 launch of the .XXX domain extension draws near, concerned trademark owners are exploring ways to shield their brands from this controversial top-level domain name (“TLD”), designed specifically to house sexually explicit websites operated by the adult entertainment industry. In response, ICM Registry, the registry charged with operating the TLD by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers ("ICANN"), has announced several protective measures that may offer at least some comfort to trademark owners who view the .XXX TLD as a prime target for trademark infringers and cybersquatters.
