Last year, we wrote an article warning of the Consumer Finance Protection Bureau’s next possible regulatory targets: foreclosure law firms and their lawyers. At the time, we cautioned that the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act was ripe for CFPB enforcement actions against lawyers and we predicted that the number of consumer protection complaints by the CFPB against lawyers and their law firms would significantly increase.
We were right. Since 2014, the CFPB has filed legal actions against nearly two dozen lawyers, law firms and their affiliated entities.
