At first glance, a lottery selection process appears to be a great fit for many situations. To determine which students get the most coveted dorm rooms or parking spaces, some universities utilize a lottery selection process. Broadway fans can obtain the opportunity to purchase show tickets by applying for a random ticket distribution process. Even the office of United States Citizenship and Immigration Services has utilized a lottery system to allocate nonimmigrant visas. It therefore comes as no surprise that the organizers of at least one popular marathon — the New York City Marathon — use a lottery selection process to decide which hopeful runners will have the opportunity to participate in the race.
