Recession Turned Small Firm Into Giant

The merger-mania that dominated the Las Vegas legal community prior to the recession seems like a distant memory in today's economy, but it continues to shape the industry going forward.

One of those firms that got transformed was Schreck Brignone, a firm founded in the early 1960's by Frank Schreck and Leslie Terry Jones that in 2007 went from a 25-attorney office to a national firm of 250 lawyers.

Denver-based Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck has grown to 35 attorneys in its Las Vegas office and expanded its practice from gaming, corporate law, real estate and litigation to include intellectual properties, tax and securities and natural resources.

"It's worked out great because we have so much more depth and practice areas we didn't have before," said Ellen Schulhofer, the firm's managing partner in Las Vegas. "In this office now, half is gaming and half is non-gaming."
