James “Jim” Nicholson will receive the Saint Pio Award from the Saint Pio Foundation at an Awards Ceremony on May 27, 2016 in Washington, D.C. The award recognizes selfless and outstanding contribution to the Catholic Church by individuals who strongly support the Foundation. The Foundation will also present the Saint Pio Award to acclaimed actor Gary Sinise.
Nicholson served as the Secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs from 2005-2007. Prior to his tenure at Veterans Affairs, he served as the Ambassador to the Holy See for nearly four years, where Pope John Paul II knighted him for his leadership on human rights issues, in particular for his work on human trafficking, food technology and starvation. He has also served as Chairman of the Federal Interagency Council on Homeless.
With a deep history in politics, Nicholson served as Chairman of the Republican National Committee from 1997-2001. He has worked on political campaigns at every level, ranging from county commissioner to U.S. President. As Chairman of the Republican National Committee, Nicholson set records for fundraising, and in 2000 presided over winning the Presidency and majorities in the U.S. Senate, the U.S. House, state houses and state legislatures.
In 1978, he established Nicholson Enterprises, Inc., a nationally recognized land development and home building company in Colorado. Nicholson has been inducted into the National Housing Hall of Fame. Previously, he served as a Commissioner on the Colorado Air Quality Control Commission, as a Director of St. Mary Land and Exploration Company, and a Director of Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Colorado, Inc. Currently, he serves as a Director of the Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans, Inc.; The Daniels Fund; Federated Funds; NewDay USA; and is a Fellow of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.
Nicholson is Senior Counsel at Brownstein where he counsels clients in public policy, health care, state and federal regulatory law, international relations, real estate, oil and gas, and alternative energy.
The second Saint Pio Award Ceremony presented by the Saint Pio Foundation will take place on May 27, 2016 at noon at the Naval Heritage Center in Washington, D.C. In addition to award winners Sinise and Nicholson, special guests will include: H.E. Cardinal Donald Wuerl, Archbishop of Washington; H.E. Archbishop Bernardito Auzo, Apostolic Nuncio to the United Nations; acclaimed actor Joe Mategna; and the Hon. Robert P. Astorino, Westchester County Executive. Part of the proceeds of this event will be allocated to the support of the VA Maryland Healthcare System’s Homeless Program in Baltimore.
