Americans must reckon with our past.
Interior Secretary Deb Haaland, the first Native American to serve as a cabinet secretary, released the first part of the department’s report on federal Indian Boarding Schools, an investigation that begins to uncover the dark history of the Indian boarding school system. These “schools” intentionally separated Native American children from their tribes to anglicize them, while turning a blind eye to malnutrition, disease, and abuse.
From 1819 to 1969, the report released this week tracks 408 federal schools across 37 states or then territories. Five of those schools were in Colorado.
