Greg Hayes Joins Brownstein’s State Government Relations Practice In Sacramento

January 10, 2022

Hayes Will Serve as the Firm’s Sacramento Office Managing Director

Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck is pleased to announce the addition of Gregory G. Hayes as a policy director in the firm’s Sacramento office. Hayes, a long-time legislative strategist, communications consultant and political advisor, will join the State Government Relations practice and serve as the Sacramento office managing director.

“Greg’s work in the California Legislature along with his communications and executive experience make him an excellent addition to our team. Through his leadership, Greg will help us grow our Sacramento office and multistate government relations approach,” said Doug Friednash, chair of the firm’s State Government Relations Group.

Hayes provides advocacy and public affairs counsel for the leading voices of the technology sector in California as well as Fortune 500 companies. Before becoming an advocate for businesses on state and local policy issues, Hayes served as the communications director for Councilman Kevin de León (D-Los Angeles) who later served as Senate president pro tempore. He helped direct office strategy and was the senator’s chief speechwriter penning op-eds that have been printed in major publications across the country. He also served as an energy advisor to the senator and was a key player in the development of Proposition 39.

Prior to his work in the California Legislature, Hayes was president and co-founder of Clean World Partners, LLC—a bioenergy company that built the first solid organics waste-to-energy plant in the United States. He also launched and grew Liberty Reverse Mortgage to help it become the third largest reverse mortgage company in the United States and was instrumental in the growth of Hanson McClain Retirement Planning and the Hanson McClain Retirement Network during his time there as vice president of corporate communications.

“It’s exciting to be joining Brownstein’s dynamic state government relations team and help build out the firm’s Sacramento presence. This firm is all in for its clients and I’m looking forward to being a part of this energetic team,” said Hayes.

Hayes’ diverse communications background includes serving as managing director for the Sacramento office of the international public relations firm Hill and Knowlton, senior account manager with the Sacramento-based public relations and advertising firm Runyon Saltzman & Einhorn and working as a legislative aide and press secretary to four state senators in the California Legislature. He received his bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Davis.
