Sage Schaftel, a senior policy advisor in Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck’s Government Relations Department, has joined the board of directors of ALIGHT, a nonprofit organization that connects children, women and men who have suffered human trafficking to free legal help at a critical point in their recovery.
In her three-year term, Schaftel will serve as a board member and contribute to the Fundraising/Donor Cultivation Committee. She will uphold ALIGHT’s mission and values, ensure financial sustainability, act as an ambassador for the organization and partner with leadership to advance ALIGHT’s work. Her role on the Fundraising/Donor Cultivation Committee will focus on strengthening donor engagement, overseeing fundraising initiatives and supporting long-term financial growth.
Schaftel was first made aware of the scale and scope of human trafficking in the United States about 15 years ago and has been passionate about finding ways to support individuals who have been abused or exploited ever since.
“Human trafficking is one of the most horrific crimes and it is often seen as an issue that is pervasive in other countries, but not well-known to be an issue in the U.S.,” she said. “Further, the focus is often on addressing the situation in which an individual is being trafficked and immediate next steps, with support services often dropping off or inadequately addressing the longer-term barriers to recovery and full integration into a survivor’s community. ALIGHT is unique in focusing on sustained support for survivors, recognizing the challenges that exist and limit survivors’ ability to recover and reintegrate.”
