November 16, 2020

Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck is pleased to announce that David R. Hale, former chief privacy officer at TD Ameritrade, will join the firm’s Intellectual Property Department as a shareholder in its Washington, D.C., office. Hale will spearhead the firm’s privacy practice.

“In a hyper-connected world, saying cybersecurity is a priority is an understatement,” said Rich Benenson, managing partner of the firm. “When we were looking to add additional firepower to our IP team, David was at the top of the list. His executive-level experience and high-caliber counsel will be invaluable in helping our clients protect one of their most valuable assets—their data.”

Hale brings 20 years of experience and deep knowledge of privacy, cybersecurity, technology and marketing issues including transactions and litigation. As an attorney and corporate executive, he has a history of creatively solving complex business problems. He develops strategies to address new, emerging and future privacy laws and regulations, including drafting and overseeing the implementation of comprehensive privacy, data classification and data protection policies and procedures.

“We’re thrilled to welcome David, who brings deep expertise and leadership to our IP team here at Brownstein,” said Craig Hemenway, Intellectual Property Department chair. “David will play a pivotal role as we continue to expand our privacy practice.”

During his 13 years at TD Ameritrade, Hale founded and built TD Ameritrade’s enterprise privacy program and information breach response team. He also headed the group protecting TD Ameritrade’s intellectual property and innovations and helped design the company’s innovative approach to social media and capturing the value of its technology innovation.

“Brownstein is a great firm with a lot of talent. I’m looking forward to joining the IP Department to help clients with the increasingly complex privacy laws and regulations and the challenges posed by managing data today,” added Hale.    Hale earned his J.D. from The George Washington University Law School and his B.A. from Rice University.
