Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck introduced the Mark F. Leonard Award in 2016 to recognize one employee annually who embodies the firm’s core values—All In, Excellence, Respect, Giving Back—and inspires this behavior in others.
“The firms’ values are extremely important to the firm’s success,” said Rich Benenson, managing partner of the firm. “These values have guided us and predicated our success for 50-plus years and never have they been more important than this year.”
Brownstein is pleased to announce that Russ Sullivan is the recipient of the 2020 Mark F. Leonard Award.
Russ is a shareholder in the firm’s Washington, D.C., office and serves as chair of Brownstein’s National Tax Policy Group. He provides unparalleled insight into the legislative and regulatory risks and opportunities related to tax policy. A Capitol Hill veteran, he has leveraged his vast network and industry expertise to devise and execute complex strategies for clients on a broad range of issues.
Russ is known for his all-in leadership approach; tireless efforts on behalf of the firm’s clients; dedication to building a strong team; reputation of honesty, integrity and transparency; commitment to his community; and passion for fostering at-risk youth, having served as the legal or designated guardian for 22 teenagers over the past two decades.
The firm’s tax team submitted a nomination for Russ without his knowledge. In the submission, team members wrote: “During the pandemic, Russ’ work has exemplified his commitment to respecting his colleagues while working under pressure. He’s provided thoughtful leadership during an exceptionally difficult time. Russ has stewarded the resources of this firm in a way that recognizes the talents and abilities of each individual.”
Russ was recognized on Dec. 7 with the Mark F. Leonard Award at a firmwide virtual town hall. Shareholder Mark Leonard, who was honored with the inaugural award and serves as its namesake, and Managing Partner Rich Benenson presented Russ with the award.
“Working with Russ is inspirational; he inspires me to work harder, to be a better person,” said Rosemary Becchi, strategic advisor and counsel at Brownstein.
“There are many ways to spend time and money helping children in need, but Russ has raised this to a level that goes beyond anything I have ever seen,” added Norm Brownstein, founder and chairman.
This year, the Mark F. Leonard Award Committee received 20 nominations from across the firm with some individuals receiving multiple nominations. Watch the video below to learn more about why Russ is so deserving of this award.
Congratulations on this well-deserved honor, Russ!
