Executive Committee
Background
Influential advocate and fundraiser in Democratic politics. Tech and telecom attorney who served for the Senate Commerce Committee. Thrives in critical situations that require a rapid response.
Al Mottur is a member of the firm’s Executive Committee and a senior Democratic strategist who solves the most complex and thorny political issues clients face in Washington, D.C. He connects organizations with leaders at the highest levels of Democratic politics and uses his legal and policy intellect to build consensus around solutions. When Fortune 50 corporations or sovereign governments face a major crisis, Al is often the person they turn to. He is at his best in high-pressure, high-stakes scenarios. Al has successfully protected high-profile mergers and acquisitions, defended companies from contentious oversight battles, and delivered legislative victories that saved clients billions of dollars.
As co-chair of the firm’s technology and telecommunications practice, Al engages federal policymakers as they develop legislation and regulations to address emerging technologies, data privacy, Big Tech, competition law and infrastructure. He has strong relationships with political and career officials at the Department of Commerce, FTC and FCC, as well as with Democratic leadership in Congress, including senior members of the House and Senate commerce committees. Al formerly served as senior communications counsel for the Senate Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee.
In addition to his advocacy, Al is a prolific fundraiser for the Democratic Party. He spearheaded the firm’s bundling efforts during the last presidential election, raising more money for the DNC than any other D.C. lobbying firm.
Representative Matters
- Represented a major retailer that came under congressional scrutiny from three different committees for a data breach that compromised the personal information of millions of U.S. consumers. Resulted in our client’s reputation remaining intact and the Judiciary Committee chair commenting favorably on Brownstein’s representation.
- Represents numerous sovereign nations in Washington, D.C. Builds relationships that have enabled sovereign nations to engage in productive dialogue with the United States even during periods of turmoil.
- Provided critical engagement with House and Senate leadership when the medical device industry was fiercely pursuing a provision in the 2020 federal spending package that would permanently repeal the medical device excise tax. Successfully worked to ensure the repeal remained a priority of senior lawmakers and that it was signed into law.
