Background

Intellectual property litigator with deep technical expertise in complex industries. Physics and engineering background. Private sector experience.

Drawing on his background in physics and structural engineering, James Reed represents clients in patent and trade secret disputes involving sophisticated mechanical, electromechanical and industrial technologies across the heavy industry, consumer technology and transportation sectors. His practice combines rigorous technical analysis with strategic legal advocacy, enabling him to quickly assess complex systems, evaluate the legal issues and develop effective litigation strategies.

In addition to his intellectual property litigation practice, James has developed a complementary focus on global risk, trade and investment matters. He works closely with clients to develop proactive strategies to manage global risk, protect investment interests and address trade‑related challenges that intersect with their core technologies and supply chains.

Before beginning his legal career, James worked as a structural project engineer for a Maryland-based firm, where he led the design and implementation of temporary vehicle bridge systems for public and private entities. He also has experience with the design and construction of industrial power facilities, providing him with firsthand insight into the infrastructure, engineering constraints and operational realities that often lie at the center of intellectual property, trade and regulatory disputes.
