Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck welcomes Greg Sunstrum to the firm as a senior policy advisor in the firm’s Washington, D.C., office. Prior to joining Brownstein, Sunstrum was U.S. federal affairs lead for a company that built software, hardware, maps and cloud-support infrastructure to power self-driving vehicles.
“Artificial intelligence and autonomous vehicles continue to be an important part of the energy and commerce debate. Greg’s experience in-house with an AV company and also as a lead staffer for key members of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce will bolster our health care and telecommunications practices,” said Nadeam Elshami, co-chair of Brownstein’s Government Relations Department.
Before joining the firm, Sunstrum worked for a private artificial intelligence company handling advocacy engagement at all levels of the federal government, laying groundwork with congressional and administration offices to pass a federal framework for the deployment of autonomous vehicles in the United States. This work established and bolstered his abilities to put client goals in front of key decision-makers to produce tangible results.
Sunstrum also served as the lead legislative staffer for key members on the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, where he successfully negotiated several bipartisan bills on a diverse set of issues. He developed strong connections in the lower chamber serving Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-MI) both as deputy chief of staff and legislative director, and later as chief of staff. His time in the House also includes a stint in the office of former Rep. John Dingell (D-MI). In this role, he developed an understanding of the lawmaking process and authored key provisions in several pieces of legislation.
Sunstrum received his undergraduate degree from the University of Michigan.
