Natural Resources Attorney Andrew Spielman Rejoins Brownstein

December 07, 2020

Brownstein Hyatt Farber Schreck is pleased to announce that Andrew L. Spielman will rejoin the firm’s Natural Resources Department as a shareholder in its Denver office. Spielman most recently served as chief operating officer and general counsel for the parent company of Silverton Mountain, Aspen Heliski and Chordline Aviation and was an associate at Brownstein from 1998‒2002.

“It’s great to have Andy back at Brownstein,” said Rich Benenson, managing partner of the firm. “He brings with him two decades of natural resources law preeminence and industry leadership that will benefit our clients. His recent experience as an executive in the hospitality industry makes him a great fit with our strategically focused practice areas.”

Spielman’s legal practice focuses primarily on obtaining and defending development approvals for the energy, mining and recreation industries. He is widely regarded as a preeminent energy, public lands and natural resources lawyer whose practice centers around assisting with policy and regulatory issues involved in developing new facilities, as well as in the public land use and environmental permitting process. He is the former director of the Future of Oil & Gas Initiative at the Colorado School of Mines' Payne Institute of Public Policy.

Previously, Spielman served as chair of WilmerHale’s Energy, Environment and Natural Resources practice and was co-partner in charge of the Denver office. He has also served in senior positions at the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), including special assistant to EPA’s administrator, and as chair of the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission and the Colorado Regional Air Quality Council.

“With his depth of experience in energy and mining, Andy will be a strong addition to the firm’s Natural Resources Department,” said Ryan Smith, Natural Resources Department chair. “Andy will play an important role as we help clients navigate new regulations.”

“I’m so pleased to be back at Brownstein. Their approach of finding business solutions through law and policy is a great fit for my practice,” added Spielman.

Spielman earned his B.A. and master of government administration from the University of Pennsylvania, his J.D. from Georgetown University Law Center and attended Oxford University for an executive leadership program.
